How Kaiser coverage works at our office

Kaiser is different from most insurance carriers. Here's what you actually need to know before your first visit — in plain language, no insurance jargon.

1
Kaiser routes chiropractic through ASH

Kaiser doesn't pay chiropractors directly. Chiropractic benefits are administered by American Specialty Health (ASH), a separate company Kaiser contracts with. We're in-network with ASH, so when we verify your Kaiser plan, we're actually checking your ASH benefits.

2
Not all Kaiser plans include chiropractic

Chiropractic is often an employer-selected add-on to Kaiser plans, not a default benefit. Some Kaiser members have coverage, others don't. We verify your specific plan before your first visit so you know exactly what's covered.

3
Visit limits vary by plan

If your plan includes chiropractic, you'll have a set number of visits per year — commonly 20, 24, or 30. We track your visit count and let you know where you stand.

4
The adjustment is what's covered

Like Medicare, the ASH benefit covers the spinal adjustment itself. Soft tissue work, e-stim, moist heat, and Active Release Technique aren't included — but you can add them as cash-pay extras if you want the full treatment experience.

5
No referral needed

Unlike seeing a specialist inside Kaiser, you don't need a referral from your Kaiser PCP to see us for chiropractic. You can book directly through our office or online.

6
We verify before your first visit

Give us your Kaiser member info when you book and our team will verify your ASH chiropractic benefits — visit allowance, copay, deductible — before you ever walk in. No surprise bills.

The adjustment is covered. The extras are optional.

Your Kaiser chiropractic benefit focuses on the spinal adjustment itself. Most patients choose to add soft tissue work and therapy to get more out of each visit — those are cash-pay add-ons, not Kaiser-covered.

✓ Kaiser / ASH Covered

Spinal Adjustment

  • Manual spinal manipulation (chiropractic adjustment)
  • Initial exam and treatment planning
  • Progress re-evaluations as needed
  • Covered up to your plan's annual visit limit
+ Optional Cash Add-Ons

Full Treatment Extras

  • Soft tissue and muscle work
  • Active Release Technique (ART)
  • E-stim and moist heat
  • Flexion-distraction on the Hill Autoflex table
  • Rehab exercise instruction
Why patients add the extras: The adjustment holds longer when the surrounding soft tissue is treated first. Most of our Kaiser patients opt to add soft tissue work and e-stim because it means fewer visits overall and better results. Cash rates are transparent — we discuss pricing before you decide, no pressure either way.

On a Kaiser PPO through your employer?

A small number of Kaiser members have a PPO plan (usually offered through a large employer) with out-of-network benefits. If that's you, your plan may reimburse a portion of your visits outside the Kaiser/ASH network. These plans are rare — we'll verify whether yours qualifies when you book. If you're not sure which plan you have, just share your member ID and we'll check.

Common reasons Kaiser members book with us

Most Kaiser patients come in for one of these — often after their PCP said "you could try chiropractic" but didn't point them anywhere specific.

Questions Kaiser patients ask us most

Short, honest answers to the most common questions we get about Kaiser and chiropractic care. If you don't see your question, give us a call at (858) 558-3111.

Do you accept Kaiser Permanente insurance? +

Yes — Dr. Loewenstein is in-network with Kaiser chiropractic coverage through American Specialty Health (ASH), the company Kaiser uses to administer chiropractic benefits. If your Kaiser plan includes chiropractic, your spinal adjustment is covered at our La Jolla office in UTC.

Because not every Kaiser plan includes chiropractic (it's often an employer add-on), we always verify your specific benefits before your first visit. Just give us your Kaiser member info when you book and we'll confirm your coverage, visit allowance, and any copay.

What is ASH and why does Kaiser use it? +

American Specialty Health (ASH) is a separate company that Kaiser — along with several other major insurance carriers — contracts with to manage chiropractic, acupuncture, and physical therapy benefits. When a Kaiser member uses their chiropractic benefit, the visit is billed to ASH, not directly to Kaiser.

For you as a patient it's mostly invisible — you just use your Kaiser card and we handle the ASH billing on our end.

Do I need a referral from my Kaiser PCP? +

No. Unlike seeing a specialist inside Kaiser's system, you don't need a referral from your Kaiser primary care provider to see us for chiropractic care. You can book directly with our office online or by phone.

If you prefer to have your PCP in the loop, we're happy to send them a summary of your care — just let us know.

What exactly does my Kaiser plan cover? +

If your Kaiser plan includes chiropractic, the benefit covers the spinal adjustment — manual spinal manipulation — up to your plan's annual visit limit (commonly 20–30 visits per year depending on your plan).

Soft tissue work, Active Release Technique, e-stim, moist heat, and flexion-distraction are not included in the ASH benefit. Most patients choose to add these as cash-pay extras because the adjustment holds longer when the surrounding muscles are treated first. Cash-pay pricing is transparent and we discuss it with you up front — never any surprise charges.

How do I know if my Kaiser plan includes chiropractic? +

The fastest way is to let us verify for you. Share your Kaiser member ID when you book and our team checks with ASH directly — usually same day. We'll confirm whether chiropractic is included, how many visits you have, and any copay or deductible.

You can also call the member services number on the back of your Kaiser card and ask whether your plan includes a chiropractic benefit through ASH. The answer will depend on the plan your employer selected.

What if my Kaiser plan doesn't include chiropractic? +

If chiropractic isn't part of your Kaiser benefit, you have two options. Most Kaiser members choose to come in cash-pay — our rates are transparent and many patients find it's worth the out-of-pocket cost for the ART, soft tissue work, and adjustment combination.

If you have a Kaiser PPO plan through your employer (rare, but they exist), you may have out-of-network benefits that can reimburse a portion of your visits. We'll check when we verify your plan.

Where is your office and do you see patients near La Jolla? +

Our office is at 5151 Shoreham Place, Suite 175, in UTC — just off La Jolla Village Drive, minutes from UCSD, La Jolla Village Square, and the Westfield UTC mall. It's a short drive from La Jolla proper, and easy parking is available on-site.

We see patients from La Jolla, UTC, UCSD, Clairemont, Mira Mesa, Sorrento Valley, and Pacific Beach.

How quickly can I be seen? +

Most new Kaiser patients can be scheduled within 1–3 days, often same-week. If you're dealing with an acute flare-up, call the office at (858) 558-3111 and we'll do our best to get you in faster.

The easiest way to book is online through ZocDoc — you can see real-time availability and pick a slot that works for you.
