Dr. Jordan Loewenstein is in-network with Anthem Blue Cross PPO plans and UC SHIP — the insurance plan for UCSD students. No referral required for PPO patients. UCSD students: we explain the referral process step by step so your visit is covered.
Using your Anthem Blue Cross insurance at our UTC San Diego office is straightforward for PPO patients. UCSD students on UC SHIP need one extra step — we walk you through it below.
Anthem chiropractic benefits vary by plan type. PPO patients self-refer through the Prudent Buyer network. HMO patients may route through ASH. Here's what each plan looks like.
UCSD students are automatically enrolled in UC SHIP (Anthem Blue Cross). Chiropractic is covered — but requires a referral from UCSD Student Health Services first. No exceptions, no retroactive referrals. Here's exactly how to get covered.
Per UCSD's own policy: "The UC SHIP plan requires that you obtain a written referral from UCSD SHS prior to receiving any non-emergency care outside of SHS. Retroactive referrals will not be provided." If you show up to our office without a referral, your UC SHIP benefits will not apply and you'll be responsible for the full cost of your visit.
Most Anthem Blue Cross PPO plans cover chiropractic care for musculoskeletal conditions. Common conditions we treat for Anthem patients in San Diego:
The most common questions Anthem patients — and UCSD students — ask before booking their first visit.
Yes. Most Anthem Blue Cross PPO plans cover chiropractic care for musculoskeletal conditions in California. Coverage typically includes 20–30 visits per benefit period with a copay that varies by plan after your deductible. Dr. Jordan Loewenstein is in-network with Anthem Blue Cross through the Prudent Buyer PPO network at his UTC San Diego office. Call (858) 558-3111 and we'll verify your specific plan at no cost.
For most Anthem Blue Cross PPO plans — no referral is required. You can call or book directly without going through your primary care physician first. The exception is UC SHIP for UCSD students, which requires a written referral from UCSD Student Health Services before any non-emergency care outside of SHS. Anthem HMO chiropractic riders also do not require a referral when using an ASH provider.
Yes. UC SHIP (Anthem Blue Cross) covers chiropractic care at in-network providers with a specialty copay that varies by plan and no deductible for office visits. Dr. Loewenstein is an in-network Anthem provider less than 2 miles from UCSD campus. You must have a written referral from UCSD Student Health Services before your appointment — retroactive referrals are not issued.
Call UCSD Student Health Services at (858) 534-3300 to schedule an appointment. During your visit, describe your symptoms — neck pain, back pain, sciatica, headaches, or sports injury — and specifically request a referral to see a chiropractor at Dr. Jordan Loewenstein's office at 5151 Shoreham Place, Suite 175, San Diego, CA 92122. Once you have the written referral, call us at (858) 558-3111 to book your appointment and bring the referral to your first visit.
Your UC SHIP benefits will not apply and you will be responsible for the full cost of your visit out of pocket. UCSD's policy is explicit: retroactive referrals are not issued under any circumstances. Get the referral from Student Health Services before your appointment — not after. If you have questions about whether your referral is in order before booking, call us at (858) 558-3111 and we'll help you confirm.
These are two completely separate insurance companies with different provider networks. Anthem Blue Cross is part of the national Elevance Health (formerly Anthem) network and uses the Prudent Buyer PPO network in California. Blue Shield of California is a California-only nonprofit that uses ASH for chiropractic on some plan types. Both are accepted at our office. If you have Blue Shield, see our Blue Shield page for details specific to your plan.
Only for Anthem HMO plans that include a chiropractic/acupuncture rider — these route through ASH (American Specialty Health) and require an ASH participating provider. Anthem PPO plans (including UC SHIP) do not go through ASH — chiropractic visits process directly through the Anthem Prudent Buyer PPO network. Dr. Loewenstein is in the Anthem PPO network, so PPO patients are covered without any ASH involvement.
Yes. Chiropractic care is a qualified medical expense under IRS guidelines — you can use your HSA or FSA to pay for copays, deductibles, and any out-of-pocket costs. We accept HSA and FSA cards directly at our office. This applies to both standard Anthem PPO patients and UC SHIP students.
We're accepting new Anthem patients and UCSD students with UC SHIP in UTC San Diego. Call or book online — we'll verify your coverage and walk you through the referral process if needed.
