You can choose any provider within the VA Community Care Network — you are not locked into the closest provider geographically. TriWest Healthcare Alliance is the third-party administrator (TPA) that manages the VA Community Care Network in CCN Region 4, which covers California. They process referrals, authorize care, and handle billing between the VA and community providers like my office. You don't interact with TriWest directly in most cases — they work behind the scenes. Your VA care team and my office handle the coordination.
The referral preparation process can take up to 14 days from the time your VA care team submits it. Once TriWest authorizes the care and you receive your authorization letter, you can schedule your appointment right away. To start the process, contact the VA San Diego Community Care Office at (858) 623-1879 (option 3 for patients) or ask your VA primary care provider at your next appointment.
